Dear Spectator, little more than two months to go for the inauguration of the 89th Opera Festival at the Verona Arena, and the preparations are well underway to get the largest open-air stage in the world ready for the event. The Arena amphitheatre with its millenary stones will once again witness the colossal scenography, exciting atmosphere and beautiful singing in a blaze of art, history and culture. The National anthem by Mameli will open the 2011 Festival on the inauguration evening June 17th, with the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, present, who has kindly accepted the invitation from the Mayor, Flavio Tosi, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy, here in Verona. Six operas are alternating in a total of 49 performances, from June 17th till September 3rd, starring some of the most famous names from the opera world, together with Orchestra, Choir and Corps de Ballet of the Arena di Verona.  The season is beginning on June 17th 2011 with a new stage setting of La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, designed by the Argentinean Director Hugo de Ana. The orchestra is conducted by Maestro Carlo Rizzi, who is debuting for the first time at the Arena.  The second opera on stage on June 18th 2011 is Aida by Giuseppe Verdi. The stage setting is designed by Gianfranco de Bosio, who was inspired by the fascinating scenography of the historic production in 1913, designed by the architect Ettore Fagiuoli, and which confirms Aida as the most loved and performed opera at the Arena. The orchestra is conducted by Maestro Daniel Oren. On June 25th 2011 is on stage the first performance of Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini, directed by Hugo de Ana who also designed the scenery, costumes and lights for the highly successful 2007 edition. The orchestra is conducted by the very young Maestro Andrea Battistoni from Verona, who is making his debut at the Arena. The fourth title is Nabucco by Giuseppe Verdi opening on July 9th 2011. This production is one of the most historic and traditional at the Verona Arena, with scenery by Rinaldo Olivieri and directed by Gianfranco de Bosio, Maestro Julian Kovatchev is conducting. The fifth title is La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini with the highly successful stage setting by the French director Arnaud Bernard. The Arena Orchestra is conducted by Maestro John Neschling. Final and sixth opera on stage is Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod, second new stage design for 2011 on stage on August 20th, 24th, 27th 2011. The Arena Orchestra is conducted by Maestro Fabio Mastrangelo appearing for the first time at the Arena. 하루에도 정신없이 쏟아지는 쓸모없는 뉴스레터 속에서 작은 즐거움을 찾았습니다. 작년 이탈리아 여행에서 출발 전부터 "기필코" 해 보겠다고 맘 먹은 몇 가지 안되는 제 나름의 미션 중 하나가 '오페라 보기'였습니다. 최고의 극장으로 지금도 손색이 없는 '라 스칼라'에서 볼 것인가, 아니면 로마에서? 아니면... 몇 가지 방안을 생각하다 선택한 것이 '베로나의 아레나'에서 보는 오페라였습니다. 평소 야외공연을 별로 선호하진 않지만(음향적 조건 때문에) 별빛이 쏟아지는 야외에서 2000년전에 만들어진 돌 위에 앉아 바라보는 공연은 이곳이 아니라면 불가능하다고 생각되었기 때문입니다. 떠나기 몇 달 전부터 공연을 결정하고, 예약하고, 좌석 지정하고... 그 설레임이 얼마나 컸던지 지금도 가슴이 뜁니다. 물론 실제 공연에서 주는 감동은 엄청 났겠죠? ^^

그런데 그 베로나의 아레나에서 2011년 새로운 프로그램인 89번째 오페라 페스티벌이 확정되었나 봅니다. 6월 부터 시작하지만 괜찮은 공연은 몇 달 전부터 표가 없어서 못 산다는 말, 아시는 분들은 다 아시리라 생각합니다. 혹, 이탈리아 여행을 계획하고 계시는 분이 있으시다면 베로나 적극 추천해드립니다. 제 여행에서 Best 3를 꼽으라면 베로나, 아씨시, 베네치아 주변의 작은 섬들(카프리가 살짝 걸리네요)... 을 꼽는 답니다(음... 로마는 조금 다른 이야기인 것 같습니다). 크게 알려지지는 않았지만 소박한 아름다움 속에서 자신의 빛을 발하고 있는 베로나를 보시지 않으면 이탈리아 여행에서 엄청 후회하실거라 생각합니다. ^^ 거기에 덤으로 오페라까지... 꿈꿔보시길.


이번 89번째 오페라 페스티벌은 은 총 6개의 오페라 프로그램과 49개의 크고 작은 연주회들로 구성된다고 합니다. 6월 17일 부터 9월 3일까지 진행되는 페스티벌은 '라 트라비아타(La Traviata)'를 시작으로 베로나 아레나에서 빼놓을 수 없는 '아이다(Aida)', '세빌리아의 이발사(Il Barbiere di Siviglia)', '나부코(Nabucco)', '라 보엠(La Boheme)', 마지막으로 '로미오와 줄리엣(Romeo et Juliette)'이 공연된다고 합니다.
작년엔 나비부인을 공연했었는데 이번엔 빠졌네요. 대신에 세빌리아의 이발사가 처음으로 공연된다고 합니다. 또한 아레나 공연에서 그 역사를 자랑하는 나부코도 공연한다고 하니 평소 맘에 두었다면 꼭 한번 찾아보시길 권합니다. 일부러 오페라를 보기 위해 갈 수는 없지만 이탈리아에 가게 된다면 약간의 일정조정으로 드르는 건 어렵지 않으리라 생각합니다. 이런 공연 우리나라에서는 엄청난 비용을 지불해야 하지만 그에 비해 좀 멀찍이 떨어져 있긴 하지만 저렴하면서도 훌륭한 공연을 접할 수 있으니 절대 후회하지 않는 선택이 될 것입니다.

베로나 아레나의 협찬을 받아서도 아니고, 홍보를 부탁받아서도 아니고, 개인적인 경험으로 지난 이탈리아 여행에서 잊을 수 없는 멋진 경험이었기에 여러분에게 추천해드립니다.
